Green Tea for Weight Loss

Green tea has been credited with providing a wide variety of health benefits, many of which have not been validated by scientific evidence. These claims and any for which academic citations are currently missing are listed here:

1. Stopping certain neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's.

2. The prevention and treatment of cancer.

3. Treating multiple sclerosis.

4. Preventing the degradation of cell membranes by neutralizing the spread of free radicals which occur during oxidation process.
Reducing the negative effects of LDL cholesterol (bad cholesterol) by lowering levels of triglycerides and increasing the production of HDL cholesterol (good cholesterol).

5. Increasing fat oxidation (helps the body use fat as an energy source) and raising metabolism.

6. Japanese researchers claim if you drink five cups of green tea a day, you'll burn 70 to 80 extra calories. Dr. Nicholas Perricone, an anti-aging specialist, appeared on the Oprah Winfrey show and told Oprah's viewers they can lose 10 lbs. in 6 weeks drinking green tea instead of coffee. Drinking green tea will increase your metabolism and helps to lower cholesterol levels. This promotes the burning of fat safely and naturally.

7. Some green tea lovers restrict their intake because of the caffeine it contains — about half the amount as is found in coffee. Too much caffeine can cause nausea, insomnia or frequent urination.

8. Drinking green tea mixed with honey can often have a soothing effect on a sore throat.

An Inconvenient Truth

Former United States Vice President Al Gore's claim is that global warming is real and largely human-caused. Gore presents specific data that supports the film's thesis, including:

. The Keeling curve, measuring CO2 from the Mauna Loa Observatory.

. The retreat of numerous glaciers is shown in before-and-after photographs (see Retreat of glaciers since 1850).

. A study by researchers at the Physics Institute at the University of Bern and the European Project for Ice Coring in Antarctica presenting data from Antarctic ice cores showing carbon dioxide concentrations higher than at any time during the past 650,000 years.

. Temperature record since 1880 showing that the ten hottest years ever measured in this atmospheric record have all occurred in the last fourteen years.

. A 2004 survey by Naomi Oreskes of 928 peer-reviewed scientific articles on global climate change published between 1993 and 2003. The survey, published as an editorial in the journal Science, found that every article either supported the human-caused global warming consensus or did not comment on it.

The Associated Press contacted more than 100 climate researchers and questioned them about the film's veracity. All 19 climate scientists who had seen the movie said that Gore conveyed the science correctly. In contrast, the U.S. Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works, at the time chaired by Republican Senator Jim Inhofe issued a press release criticizing this article. Inhofe's statement that "global warming is the greatest hoax ever perpetrated on the American people" appears in the film.

Eric Steig, a climate scientist writing on RealClimate, lauded the film's science as "remarkably up to date, with reference to some of the very latest research." Michael Shermer, scientific author and founder of The Skeptics Society, wrote in Scientific American that An Inconvenient Truth "shocked me out of my doubting stance".
